LANDSTADT GATOW
Shopping Center
The development of the former British military airport Gatow in the district
Spandau by the Federal Republic of Germany began after the withdrawal of the
allied troops from Berlin. Based on the resolution for the new capital,
the government issued a project to provide an adequate supply of living space
for the government employees moving from Bonn to Berlin.

As part of the infrastructure strip within the emerging country
town of Gatow, a shopping center is to be developed. Property is
available at the western end of the strip where a sports hall, a
daycare facility for children and a high school have already been established.
The location at the Ritterfelddamm benefits the regional usage of
the shopping facility. One of the main access roads “Am Flugplatz Gatow”
to the new residential area is situated here. Next to providing supplies,
the newly constructed building functions also as an entrance marker.
Our building intends to carry on the cubist structures, to maintain the scale
of the above-mentioned objects and to blend into the landscape.
